Edit requests

{{Edit request}} I will make several edit requests in this thread (separately so they can be discussed individually).
1)

The page says Please use the search box at the top of this page or the links to the right. Feel free to subscribe to our syndicated feeds. but on mobile, which by now could well be how the majority of people land on this page by now, the links are not "on the right" but down.

Please change it so that it says "further down" on the mobile site (I think there already is something that does change the content depending on whether it's the mobile site) and link to that section with Template:Visible anchor (or something similar) so that the user can just jump to it to see what is meant. Being able to jump to/highlight the section is very useful for people who find the page confusing and don't want to search around to find what is meant. I mean {{vanchor|Content}} and [[#Content|the links to the right]] which should render as Content and the links to the right. I think the Content box is the most useful thing of the entire page and a bit buried by all the other tiles and texts. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:44, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Could somebody implement this, it's been 21 days and this sentence is clearly false for mobile users which may well be the majority of the site's users by now. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:09, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think this could be done with Extension:MobileDetect by which one could put the words into <nomobile> and ‎<mobileonly> tags. It doesn't seem to work on Commons and I don't know if there is an alternative way to show text depending on the viewmode (mobile or not). Alternatively, please simply change it to something like the links in the Content box (not specifying whether the tile is on the right or down). I think it would be best to highlight the box when clicking on that page section link and I don't know of a way to highlight the whole tile rather than only the header via Template:Visible anchor but that would be better than no highlighting at all because users may be confused what is being referred to. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:25, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Could you instead rephrase this as "or the content links section on this page" and link to the relevant section?
Generally I would discourage use of mobile only markup as my experience typically it is poorly implemented by templates.
Layout is evolving and can vary across skins, font size and browser zoom. In Vector 2022 for example layout is also impacted by whether you have both side menus open. Jdlrobson (talk) 09:23, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This would also be good and maybe better. If making the text responsive to which type of device is used one may "use media queries and the skin classes and fix the templatestyles" according to the latest comment in the VP/T thread but I don't know how well or even if that would currently work. A problem I noticed only after my 16 Aug comment is that it may be the case that it's referring to not only the Content box but also the "Highlights" tile on the right. So I think either the Content tile should be highlighted regardless as it seems to be a closer and more comprehensive fit to what is being referred to (and also I think the most useful thing in the Main page content especially for people looking to explore or search) or the two tiles be put into one div and highlighted at once.
Alternatives would include merging the two tiles with highlighted media being directly above or below "By topic" of the tile and "Meet our photographers and Meet our illustrators" getting moved into the "Participating" tile. I think I would support that but it would be a larger undertaking than simply highlighting both tiles for now or the Content tile.
Maybe I should rather make these edit requests at Template:Main Page Template (please let me know if either is clearly preferred). Prototyperspective (talk) 16:55, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Prototyperspective, ✓ Done using {{If mobile}} template. At least in English version. Please check if it works and ping me if further action is needed. --Jarekt (talk) 16:45, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! However, you changed something else – this request referred to the part or the links to the right but you changed the search box at the top which on mobile also is at the top of the page.
2. On desktop those are not at the top but at the right of the page.
3. Since there are many things on the right and the user, especially new ones, may be confused what exactly is meant I above suggested to link to the tile(s) that is referred to. This could be done via the vanchor template (here linking to #Content or other methods. I'd suggest to simply use the vanchor template and maybe improve it later on. Like this:

Please use the search box at the top of this page or {{If mobile|[[#Content|the links further down]]|[[#Content|the links to the right]]}}.

then at |Content=Content that would be changed to |Content={{visible anchor|Content}} which enables jumping right to it with highlighting wherever it is on the page. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:37, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jarekt: It doesn't work as it's not the part I described with not "on the right" but down. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:26, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Matrix and GPSLeo: Please see above and correct this, this made the Main page text more inaccurate than it was before I made this edit request over a month ago. --Prototyperspective (talk) 17:07, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would just write "use the search box" without anything about the position. If someone finds this tiny text the person likely already saw the search box. GPSLeo (talk) 17:34, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why people still confuse which part I mean to change. This is not about the search box and in the previous comment I just clarified it. I feel like the first paragraph underneath 1) is quite clear so I don't know how to make it clearer. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:13, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Prototyperspective, ✓ Done I hope I got it this time. --Jarekt (talk) 02:32, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thank you! Now the only issue left is that it does not jump to the Content section when clicking the section link. This can be solved by changing |Content=Content to |Content={{visible anchor|Content}} – could you also implement that? I think Template:Visible anchor would get protected after the change and it would probably be good to set that template to protected anyway. I've implemented these changes at Hauptseite, a translated version of the Main page. Prototyperspective (talk) 15:39, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please implement this and also the request by Aschroet (talk · contribs) to fix the Wikifunctions link at the bottom of the page. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:19, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The link is dysfunctional. Could you please fix this now? It's been multiple weeks again. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:23, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's been months now without implementation and reply and no objections. Please implement this now, currently the section link is broken: please replace |Content=Content with |Content={{visible anchor|Content}} @Mike Peel: or Jarekt, Matrix etc. Thanks! Hi everyone, in the bottom part of the Main Page with the icons to sister projects there is one broken link and some inconsistencies. The broken link is to Wikifunctions: https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Wikifunctions:Main_Page/en. Furthermore most links have the pattern https://somewiki.org/en: but for example MediaWiki links to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Template:Main_page/en. Maybe some could got through these links and repair resp. unify them. Thank you in advance, --Arnd 🇺🇦 (talk) 18:47, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Aschroet: I think this is a bug on Wikifunctions, since their home page doesn't seem to be translated, have raised at wikifunctions:Wikifunctions_talk:Main_Page#Translatable_home_page?. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:17, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mike, thanks for raising. However, i am interested what this special en: links mean and why not all links look the same despite the domain name. --Arnd 🇺🇦 (talk) 19:02, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's supposed to link to the right language version of the Wikifunctions main page, depending on your language choice here, but it seems it isn't a compatible system in the way that was expected. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:32, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, i wonder if somebody could work on this issue. I mean, it is the the main page which should not contain broken links. Why not just link to all sister projects via the main URL (https://somewiki.org) so that it does not depend on local configurations of the wikis. Thanks, --Arnd 🇺🇦 (talk) 03:36, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that something should be done here as the Main page should not contain broken links. Options include: 1. If en language is configured simply link to the Main page instead of /en as that will be in English 2. Removing the Wikifunctions link 3. Fixing only the Wikifunctions link to link to the Main page instead of the /en subpage. I don't consider this a bug in Wikifunctions and whether or not that's a bug in Wikifunctions is I think pretty irrelevant to that it should be fixed as soon as possible, that is on Commons. Prototyperspective (talk) 10:22, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to Prototyperspective for pointing me to where this really comes from: Template:Sisterprojects layout. Do I understand that the requested edit is to change {{{f-link|f:Wikifunctions:Main_Page/{{{lang|}}}}}} on that page to {{{f-link|f:Wikifunctions:Main_Page}}}? (please ping me if replying) - Jmabel ! talk 17:25, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request: add link= to Generic Camera Icon

{{Edit request}}

Please add link=Commons:Photo challenge to the camera icon. This not only opens the relevant page when clicking the icon, but also excludes the icon from the fullscreen media viewer gallery.

-|PhotoChallenge Text= [[File:Generic Camera Icon.svg|100px|right]] …
+|PhotoChallenge Text= [[File:Generic Camera Icon.svg|100px|right|link=Commons:Photo challenge]] …

Thank you! – Simon04 (talk) 17:51, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Although I'm not sure how multilingual this approach is. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:34, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Understanding "free"

When looking for a link to explain to a Wikimedia reuser that Commons only hosts free content the Main page didn't help. The tag line "a collection of 109,788,247 freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute" links to Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia which is irrelevant for Wikimedia reusers, who I assume are our biggest reuser. The second link is to Commons:Welcome. There, at the very bottom of the fourth paragraph (4 screens down on mobile) I found Commons:First steps/Reuse which suitably defines "free", it is somewhat burried though and has no dedicated wikilink.

Incidentally, I looked at a few of the major Wikipedias and they generally end up directing users to free content pretty quickly, I guess not adopted on Commons for multilingual reasons. Commander Keane (talk) 18:31, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Good point so which change would you propose – adding something to the top of Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia or changing what that word links to? I think it may be best if there was Commons:Using content on Commons which includes (maybe transcludes) the part about reusing it outside and starts with info about free/open content. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:10, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am not 100% sure what is best, just that an improvement would be good. Maybe change the link "freely usable" in the tag line from Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia to => Commons:Reusing content.
The Commons:Reusing content page would open with "Wikimedia Commons hosts freely usable content" and then have links to Commons:Using content on Wikimedia and Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia
Offtopic: The Commons:First steps/Reuse section "Embedding Commons media in third-party projects" (which is currently about InstantCommons) should be called "Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia" and the scope expanded.

Edit request: replace Cat:Images

It is requested that an edit or modification be made to this protected page.
Administrators: Please apply <nowiki> or {{Tl}} to the tag after the request is fulfilled.

Jmabel

Currently, the Main page prominently links to Category:Images on "Images", suggesting this is how to find Images and that this is a good place to start exploring the site, and a good subsite for new users to visit.

However, most categories contain images. Most images (or categories containing images) are not located in the Cat:Images branch, it's currently misleading and very incomplete. Moreover, the most useful subcategory of it, Category:Images by topic (similar to e.g. Category:Photography by subject and Category:Videos by subject) is currently up for deletion and without this subcat this place would be even less useful than it already is. (It makes little sense for people to browse images by filetype instead of by subject for example.)

Thus, I suggest to replace this link with something else, such as having it not linked at all, or linking to a broad cat like Category:Categories.
